Delhi Police has re-launched the Traffic Sentinel Scheme as Traffic Prahari, a mobile app for reporting traffic violations. Learn how it works and when it may launch in Tamil Nadu.
“Empowering citizens to become guardians of the road – that’s what Traffic Prahari stands for.”
The Traffic Management Division of Delhi Police first launched the Traffic Sentinel Scheme in December 2015 to encourage the public to report traffic violations. Taking a digital leap forward, the scheme was re-launched as Traffic Prahari on September 1, 2024, introducing a modern, user-friendly mobile application for Android and iOS users.
The Traffic Prahari App, developed by Delhi Police, is designed to allow citizens to report traffic violations directly through their smartphones, making road safety a shared responsibility between authorities and the public.
The app marks a significant step towards community-driven traffic management. Some of its major advantages include:
“With Traffic Prahari, every citizen becomes a responsible road warrior.”
Currently, the initiative is active in Delhi, but there is growing interest in expanding similar technology to other states. Tamil Nadu, known for its high traffic density and growing urban mobility, could benefit from such a system to curb violations and improve safety. Authorities are reportedly evaluating options to introduce comparable citizen-reporting solutions in the near future.
The Traffic Prahari app is a mobile platform launched by Delhi Police that allows citizens to report traffic violations by capturing photos or videos of offending vehicles and submitting them directly to the traffic authorities.
Traffic Prahari was re-launched on September 1, 2024, as an upgraded version of the earlier Traffic Sentinel Scheme, which was initially introduced in December 2015.
The app is available on both the Google Play Store for Android users and the Apple App Store for iOS users. After downloading, users need to register with their mobile number, OTP, name, and email ID.
Users can report various violations, including signal jumping, dangerous driving, helmetless riding, speeding, and illegal parking.
While it is currently operational in Delhi, there are indications that similar citizen-reporting initiatives may be introduced in Tamil Nadu in the near future to improve traffic management.
